Soaring to Uncommon Heights through Mentoring

RICHARD E. CARUSO
President
The Uncommon Individual Foundation

Richard E. Caruso, Ph.D., founded The Uncommon Individual Foundation in 1986 and is the author of Mentoring and the Business Environment (1992). This book evolved from Dr. Caruso's doctoral research at The London School of Economics and produced some revolutionary concepts which fundamentally altered the field of mentoring. In establishing the Foundation, he had come to realize that some form of mentoring had played an important role in his own development. Thus, in 1988 he decided to take a leave of absense from his job and do research in an attempt to determine whether or not the benefits of mentoring could be harnessed and made available to many who might not otherwise have the experience.

In 1989 Dr. Caruso became founder, chief executive and chairman of Integra LifeSciences Corporation, a world leader in the development of proprietary technologies that enable the human body to regenerate tissue that has been irreversibly lost due to disease, accident or surgery. Integra LifeSciences has grown from a few employees in 1989 to more than 150 employees in 1999.

From 1969 to 1992, Dr. Caruso was a principal and rose to the position of Executive Vice President of LFC Financial Corp., a project financing company in Radnor, Pennsylvania. Prior to joining LFC, he was associated with Price Warehouse & Co. in Philadelphia. He has served on the boards of Susquehanna University, The Baum School of Art, and the Business Performance Group of the London School of Economics. He received a B.S. degree from Susquehanna University, M.S.B.A. degree from Bucknell University, and a Ph.D. degree from the London School of Economics, University of London.
